Global warming and climate change are hard realities. Pollution levels and ecological degradation have reach unprecedented levels; Delhi’s air was toxic on Diwali night. Scientists and researchers say that climate change and pollution is triggering hurricanes and wildfires, such as Hurricane Harvey, Irma, Nate and Maria. Temperatures have increased by more than one degree since the 1880s and nine out of 10 warmest years taken place after 2000, says NASA. Arctic Ice has shrunk to its lowest in 2012. Sea levels are rising at 3.4 mm per year.

Many people may not believe but there are many Bollywood celebrities who are active throughout the year in order to save the environment and the problems that it faces. They are spreading awareness about environmental safety and conservation among the people. Being celebrities, they are much more capable of raising their voice and getting heard. They are all doing their bit to save the environment and be eco-friendly. We call them Bollywood’s Green Brigade. Here are 5 such celebrities.

Priyanka Chopra

Born in Jamshedpur, the picturesque small town of Jharkhand, Priyanka Chopra has lived in some of the most beautiful places on the earth, such as the valleys of Leh and Kashmir. She has experienced nature from close quarters, something that only fortunate people are able to do. No wonder, she has been a nature lover right from childhood. She thinks films can play a critical role in raising awareness about such social issues. She has often been involved in novel initiatives such as cleaning the Yamuna or Mumbai city and thinks that people should behave in environmentally responsible ways in their daily lives.

“I have always advocated the need for sustainable living, to make green and environmental-friendly choices in our day to day lives, and for all of us to think about what kind of a world we’re leaving behind for the future generations. It begins with simple choices. Within my home, I have made multiple changes. For example, creating green spaces with a bird-feeding unit to attract birds, butterflies, bees and thereby helping urban ecosystems thrive. I have also replaced plastic with glass and ceramics, and ensure compulsory daily waste segregation,” she said in an interview.

Sonakshi Sinha

This Bollywood diva has been vehemently advocating for eco-friendly celebrations, particularly on the occasion of festivals, in the past. She has been campaigning for eco-friendly Ganeshas over the past few years and thinks that such pollution should be stopped. Sonakshi Sinha believes that it is very important to save the environment.

“It is very important to preserve the environment. What we do today will secure a better future for the coming generations. Enough damage has been done to the environment over the years, what we do now is basically damage control. In our own ways we can all help to preserve the environment. Small measures go a big way. Switching off the lights before leaving a room saves energy, shutting the tap while brushing saves water, saving paper, not littering, recycling things is the least each one of us can do on an individual level,” she has said in a media interview.
