Voice of Environment (VoE), an environmental NGO, has unanimously selected Paltan Bazar as one of the model settlements to develop a smart ecosystem where residents, vendors, Hotels, Market Malls, Police Administration come to collaborate together for a joint initiative as “Clean & Eco-friendly Guwahati City Mission.”
Guwahati is considered as gateway of North Eastern States of India and one of fastest growing cities of Asia. Paltan Bazar is a center point of this gateway. Paltan Bazar is a core strategic area not because it is demographically dense and covered by small, medium & large sized market, but it is the place where 90% of tourists land for the first time to stay in hotels & move to different destinations thereafter.
Paltan Bazar possesses the highest number of small & star rated hotels &
guesthouses, occupied by small sized vendors including Phuchkawala, Chatwala, Chaiwala & other street food hawkers. GMC works hard to collect, transport & manage the waste. Despite Paltan Bazar being a challenging site to keep clean & sustainable, Team VoE has declared Paltan Bazar as a model sample site for their ambitious “Clean & Eco-friendly Guwahati City” initiative.
As per the said initiative, Team VoE, in association with Assam Police and other Institutions of Paltan Bazar area, has started the campaign on the occasion of “World Environment Day” (5 June 2019) by conducting a mass cleanness drive starting from Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Statue. The drive was led by Muskaan Poddar, Partha Dhar, Ritushmita Goswami and Piyali Sarkar and other team Members from different stake holders and associations of Paltan Bazar area along with Assam Police team.
The said drive continued till Paltan Bazar Police Station Point, after which a Mass Signature Campaign was conducted led by Environmentalist Moharana Choudhury, Kanhaiya Poddar, Gaurav Poddar, etc. They requested everyone to collaborate, support and join the cause for Environmental Sustainability of Paltan Bazar Area. Simultaneously, the
team started campaign with Display Card and Placards with different “Environmental Messages” whereas a special message was sent by one of VoE advisors Shri Kumar Deepak, Environment officer, United Nation
Development Programme on “ Urban Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change”. Team VoE is also concerned that there are very few plants surrounding the Paltan Bazar area. The team requested the administration and stakeholders for plantations and creating provisions for more greenery in the area which is urgently needed.
Moreover, this initiative is also supported by Assam Police, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Paltanbazar Market Association, Royal Global University, shopping malls and hotels of the area. Local residents actively participated in the campaign which concluded with a mass pledge taking ceremony to keep Paltanbazar clean and eco-friendly and with a vote of Thanks to Police Commissioner Guwahati City Deepak Kumar, IPS and GMC Commissioner, Shri Debeswar Malakar, IAS for their kind co-operation, motivation and necessary support for the mission. Team VoE requested stakeholders, vendors and Citizen Organizations to come forward for the cause to make it successful. Together we can make a difference.
