Superstar Salman Khan’s latest release Sikandar has surprisingly failed to create magic at the box office, sparking conversations around the changing preferences of the Indian audience. Known for his massive fan following and blockbuster hits, Salman has long ruled the box office with films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, and Kick. However, recent releases suggest that the star’s formulaic approach may no longer be enough to draw crowds.
Sikandar, touted as an action-packed entertainer, failed to connect with audiences, both critically and commercially. Despite the pre-release buzz and Salman’s star power, the film recorded a lackluster opening and saw a steep decline in collections within days. This marks yet another underwhelming box office performance following his previous outings like Radhe (2021) and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023), both of which failed to meet expectations.
The last film that truly resonated with audiences and critics alike was Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), where Salman showcased a more emotional, restrained side of his acting. The film was not only a commercial success but also a critical milestone in his career. Since then, however, his choice of scripts has leaned heavily on action, spectacle, and repetitive character tropes, which many now feel are outdated.
So, is the audience becoming smarter? The decline in footfalls for Salman’s recent films suggests a shift. Viewers today have access to high-quality content on OTT platforms and global cinema. They are no longer swayed by star power alone but look for solid storytelling, fresh narratives, and depth in performance.
It seems that unless stars like Salman evolve with the times and choose stronger scripts, the audience—now more aware and selective—won’t hesitate to give even the biggest names a miss.
