Celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi may currently be entertaining audiences with his infectious energy on Laughter Chefs, but long before becoming a reality show favourite, he had already explored the world of cinema. As his film Love You Loktantra gears up for its premiere on Doordarshan, the chef-turned-television personality is looking back at his acting journey, unexpected industry connections, and the joy of seeing himself on screen.
Speaking about the project, Harpal shared that Love You Loktantra marks his second film after his Bollywood debut in Bank Chor. “Love You Loktantra is my second film, and in the film, I have played a small role. I am a bar owner where actor and comedian Krushna Abhishek is performing,” he said.
The film was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Harpal admitted that his professional commitments limited the amount of time he could dedicate to acting. “I had prior commitments, so I could not extend my role beyond the time span that I could give. Moreover, this film was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am happy that Love You Loktantra is being premiered on DD National across the world. It is always a good feeling when you see yourself in films,” he shared.
Interestingly, the film also became the starting point of his equation with Krushna Abhishek, who he now shares screen space with on Laughter Chefs. “My experience of working with Krushna during that time was very limited because he was performing as a dance lead, and I had limited interaction with him during that part. And that was the first time I actually met him. Little did I know that I would be doing Laughter Chefs with him in the future. Our relationship definitely evolved so much since the time we met,” he revealed.
Despite not actively pursuing acting, Harpal admits he genuinely enjoys performing. “There is this magic in acting when you know that you are not actually playing yourself and convincing with your craft. I remember Bank Chor gave me a lot of scope. I had almost an 18-minute role in the film,” he said.
At the time, the celebrity chef was also busy launching his food products in Australia, which made it difficult to take on larger acting commitments. However, he cherishes sharing screen space with actors like Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Oberoi in Bank Chor. “Whoever has seen the film knows that my character is not a funny one, but on a serious side,” he added.
