As a devoted FRIENDS fan, I have a knack for spotting familiar faces, and let me tell you—the Materialists trailer had me doing a double take! Starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, the trailer had all the makings of a stylish, intriguing film. But my eyes? They got stuck on one particular face—one that FRIENDS fans will remember fondly. Blink, and you might miss him, but hold on a second… isn’t that Eddie Cahill?
Yes, you read that right! The same Eddie Cahill who played Rachel Green’s charming yet naive assistant-turned-boyfriend, Tag Jones, in FRIENDS Season 7. It’s been over two decades since we last saw him in Central Perk, but here he is again, now playing a 48-year-old bachelor looking for someone “more grown.”
In the trailer, Dakota Johnson’s character, a matchmaker, suggests she has a ‘31-year-old really beautiful client’ for him. And Eddie? With his signature smirk, he quips, ‘I wasn’t really thinking thirties.’ Classic! Looks like he still has that flirtatious charm we saw when he was Rachel’s assistant.
Eddie Cahill appeared in seven episodes of FRIENDS in Season 7 and made one more cameo in Season 8. Since then, he’s been active in TV and films, though mostly in episodic roles. While he may not have had another character as widely adored as Tag, his return to the big screen in Materialists is an exciting surprise for fans who remember his boyish good looks and lovable energy from the early 2000s.
With Materialists set to release on June 13, I’m officially intrigued to see how Eddie’s role plays out. While the movie itself is bound to be entertaining, for FRIENDS fans like me, it’s just another reason to take a nostalgia trip and appreciate how far our favorite guest stars have come.
