Stand-up comedian and entertainer Munawar Faruqui has experienced several hardships that tested his resilience. From financial struggles to personal setbacks, his journey has been anything but easy. Despite facing numerous challenges, he has continued to rise above them, emerging stronger each time. Here are some lesser-known aspects of his life.
His Son’s Illness
Munawar once revealed that his son was diagnosed with a rare disease called Kawasaki when he was just one and a half years old. Recalling the ordeal, he shared, “I had to buy injections worth ₹75,000, but I only had ₹700 in my wallet. My son had been unwell for a few days, and when we took him to the hospital, we learned that he needed three injections, each costing ₹25,000. I smiled at the doctor, pretending I could arrange the money, but as soon as I stepped out, I froze for almost 40 minutes, unable to think. I made ten calls for help before a place I had worked at earlier agreed to lend me the money. I rushed to Mumbai Central, collected the amount, and returned within three hours. While I was relieved, I couldn’t even smile because it wasn’t my money.”
On His Second Marriage
Munawar recently entered a new phase in his life by tying the knot for the second time. Reflecting on his marriage with Mehzabeen Coatwala, he said, “This time, the atmosphere at home is different. I am very happy. Last Ramadan, I remember feeling exhausted and praying for stability. I was tired of feeling lost, and destiny gave me exactly what I needed. I never imagined I’d find a partner like this—she is the perfect puzzle piece that was missing in my life.”
Hospitalized Before His Wedding
Just a day before his wedding, Munawar faced an unexpected health scare. Due to intestinal issues, he was hospitalized for two days. Recalling the incident, he said, “The doctors assured me they would release me soon, but when I told them, ‘It’s my wedding tomorrow!’ they laughed. However, they still refused to discharge me immediately. They advised me not to eat anything, and I agreed—I just had to be there for my wedding.”
2021 Arrest and Legal Battle
On January 1, 2021, Munawar was arrested before a performance in Indore, accused of making jokes that allegedly hurt Hindu sentiments. He spent over a month in jail before being granted bail. His arrest sparked national debate about freedom of speech, with many standing in his support. However, the controversy had a lasting impact on his career.
Cancellation of Shows
Following his arrest, Munawar faced severe backlash, leading to the cancellation of several shows across multiple states. Expressing his disappointment, he shared, “Hate won, the artist lost.” He lost around 12 shows in a short span due to threats and protests against him.
Despite these setbacks, Munawar Faruqui continues to thrive in his career, proving that resilience and perseverance can overcome even the toughest challenges.
