Actor Vijay Varma brought wit, honesty, and depth to the Matka King trailer launch, where he not only spoke about his upcoming series but also grabbed attention for his candid take on Ranveer Singh’s performance in Dhurandhar. In a moment that quickly went viral, Vijay drew a humorous yet striking comparison between their characters, both named Hamza in different films, offering a perspective that resonated with fans and cinephiles alike.
When asked about Ranveer’s portrayal and the coincidence of their characters sharing the same name, Vijay quipped, “When life gives you a Hamza, do it like Ranveer Singh in ‘Dhurandhar’ not like Hamza in ‘Darlings’.” The remark not only highlighted his appreciation for Ranveer’s performance but also cleverly referenced his own intense role in Darlings, where he played Hamza Sheikh—an abusive and alcoholic husband to Alia Bhatt’s character.
He further added, “Ranveer has hit it out of the park with Dhurandhar.” Interestingly, Vijay and Ranveer share a creative history, having worked together in Gully Boy, where they portrayed close friends—making this mutual admiration even more special.
Shifting focus to his upcoming web series Matka King, Vijay opened up about his character Brij Bhatti, offering a deeply personal and layered insight into the role. “Brij Bhatti came to Bombay from Sindh during the partition at the age of 7-8. He had a younger brother with him, he was 3-4 years younger than him. He came here and started living on the streets. Gradually, he started looking for food, work, here and there. When we meet him in the show, he is already married, he has a wife, he has a house. He has a job as a manager, but he is not allowed to dream. The morality of a middleclass man is different, the morality of a rich man is different, the morality of a poor man is different. He wants to question that. So, his entire quest is to find out why he is not allowed to dream. And he wants to dream big, which is very similar to the life that I have led. I came to Bombay with a showcase, 3 pairs of clothes, 1 pair of shoes, and a box full of books. So, I feel like that was the connection that I found with the character.”
Adding another dimension to the narrative, co-star Kritika Kamra shared her perspective on her character Gulrukh. “I find this relationship very interesting between people and power. It is very fascinating. And the world from which Gulrukh comes, she has all those things that make her powerful. Money, privilege it comes from a protected environment, but still she feels powerless. And that’s what’s interesting. And how she makes the meaning, purpose, and her journey in the show feels powerful. I found that very interesting. And unlike Vijay, I am not at all like this character. My upbringing and Gulrukh’s upbringing have nothing in common. So, it was also interesting to step into somebody who comes from privilege and is looking for power to be liberated.”Vijay will soon be seen in an upcoming web series called Matka King, which will release on April 17, on Prime Video. The series also features Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat and Gulshan Grover with Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethiya, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia, and Simran Ashwini in key roles.Actor Vijay Varma brought wit, honesty, and depth to the Matka King trailer launch, where he not only spoke about his upcoming series but also grabbed attention for his candid take on Ranveer Singh’s performance in Dhurandhar.
