Is it taboo for a man to buy sandals from the women’s section? Recently, while shopping in Matheran, my guy was looking for Kolhapuri chappals. As we browsed, he found a pair he liked, but the shopkeeper hesitated and said, “Sir, these are for the ladies.”
His response was simple yet powerful: “So what? I like them, I would like to try them on.”
He tried multiple pairs from both the men’s and women’s sections. Eventually, he chose a pair from the ladies’ section and bought them. At another store, he went through the same process, picking a pair he liked. Again, the shopkeeper repeated, “Sir, this is the ladies’ section.” But my guy remained unfazed, continued browsing, and bought another pair. I picked up one for myself too.
The entire experience made me wonder—why are we still fixated on ‘ladies’ and ‘gents’ accessories? “The lines have blurred,” he remarked, and he couldn’t be more right.
If women can buy tees and jeans from the men’s section, why is it frowned upon when a man picks something from the women’s section? Gender-fluid fashion isn’t just a trend—it’s a movement, it’s the reality. It challenges the rigid binary of ‘male’ and ‘female’ clothing and encourages individuals to express themselves freely, irrespective of gender labels.
Fashion is, after all, a means of self-expression. It should be about wearing what makes you feel comfortable and confident, rather than conforming to outdated societal norms. As my guy demonstrated, what truly matters is personal style and choice—not a label on a product.
